HISTORY BEHINED OUR CHURCH

Amayanoor Karattukunnel St.Mary’s Orthodox Church was founded in 1911 (Malayalam-Kollavarsham 1085) considering the convenience for worship of those faithful of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church with membership in the Manarcad St.Marys Church. Being the first Church for which St.Vattasseril Mar Dionysius issued Grant kalpana for its formation, the Church is rightly known as the ‘Maiden Church of St.Vattasseril Thirumeni’. Rev Fr Yakoob, Painumkal and Rev Fr. Mathews, Thaikkattu Erected the Cross and celebrated Holy mass in Kollavarsham1086 Makaram 6 and hence initiated a parish.

According to the opening decision of the Church general body held on Kollavarsham1104 Kumbham 20th the Church and all its property were registered in the name of the then Niranam Diocesan Metropolitan, LL Thoma Mar Dionysius on behalf of the Holy See of the Catholicate Throne. Laying of the foundation stone for the reconstructed Church was held on 1987 August 15 by the former vicar and the then Cochin Diocesan Metropolitan LL Yuhanon mar Severios .Consecration of the newly built Church was held in 1916 August 15. His Holiness Baselios Mathews I Catholicose was the chief celebrant and HG Joseph Mar Pachomios Metropolitan, HG Geevarghese Mar Ivanios Metropolitan and His Grace Paulose Mar Milithios Metropolitan (Now-HH Moran Mar BeseliosPaulose II) were co-celebrants. The newly constructed office complex was consecrated by H.G Geevarghese Mar Ivanios Metropolitan in 2000 January 4th.

The Thuthooty Chappel which is dedicated in the name of the declared Saint of the Malankara Church,St.Gregorious of Parumala was established in the year 1948.The chapel is now a source of alleviation and refuge to many. H.G Geevarghese Mar Ivanios Metropolitan Consecrated the re-constructed Chappel in 1943 November 2nd. HH Moran Mar Beselios Paulose II Catholicos instituted the Holy relics of St.Gregorious of Parumala in 2006 November 3rd .Cross shrine of the church which was renovated as part of the Centenary celebration of the Church and was blessed by H.G Geevarghese Mar Ivanios Metropolitan on July 6th 2009. Unprecedentedly in the history of the Church, HG Dr.Yuhanon Mar Crisostomos Conducted “washing the feet” ceremony on the day of Maundy Thursday day in 2010.

Centenary celebrations of the Church was inaugurated by Catholicose HH Mar BeseliosPaulose II. The Holy relics of St Vattasseril Mar Dionysius was instituted in the Church by Catholicose HH Baselios Didymus I. The Feast of Baptism of our Lord (Epiphany) which falls on January 5 and six is celebrated as the chief annual feast of the church while August 15 is celebrated as sunoyoperunnal and the first Saturday that comes after November 2nd is celebrated as a perunnal in the intersection of St.Gregorious of Parumala.
